Our History
Sonora Middle School serves 6th and 7th graders in the Springdale district, the largest district in the state. Built in 2012, the campus is located on the eastern edge of Springdale in the community of Sonora.
Our faculty and support staff work diligently to create an atmosphere that meets the diverse needs of the student population. Our programs and students demonstrate excellence as evidenced by awards and recognitions, such as EAST National Founder’s Awards (2018, 2023) and Quiz Bowl, Volleyball, Soccer, Cross Country, and Battle of the Book champions. SMS received School of Innovation status (2015 & 2021), was named the Shannon Wright recipient by AAMLE (2017), and honored with the distinction of being named a Arkansas Diamond School to Watch (2018 & 2021).
Our school leaders and teachers strive to be the best they can be and aspire to set examples for SMS students. Chelsea Jennings, SMS Principal, was the AAEA Arkansas Assistant Principal of the Year (2020), NASSP National Assistant Principal of the Year (2021), and Ed.S Student of the Year at the University of Arkansas. Jodi Morrison was recognized as the Middle Level Art Educator of the Year (2014). Chelsea Jennings, Stephanie Little, Tammy Cartmell, and Willow Jongewaard have earned the highest distinction in the field by becoming National Board Certified Teachers.
